Custom Iron Castings for U.S. OEM Buyers

U.S. buyers usually qualify a foundry by part risk, governing material specification, drawing revision, inspection evidence and total landed scope. This guide shows what to define before Anxin can assess a casting project.

BUYER INTENT

What a United States buyer is actually trying to de-risk.

Discovery starts with a part, material or problem. Supplier selection then moves through drawing control, evidence, sample approval and delivery scope. The page is structured in that same order so buyers and answer engines can verify each claim.

LOCAL TERMINOLOGY & STANDARDS

Use the buyer’s language, then verify the specification.

Gray iron

ASTM A48/A48M is a common U.S. specification for general engineering gray iron castings. State the exact standard edition and class on the drawing or RFQ.

Ductile iron

ASTM A536 is a common U.S. specification for ductile iron castings. State the grade, required test basis and any section-specific requirements.

Dimensions

Identify whether dimensions and tolerances use inch-pound or SI units. Do not combine values from different systems unless the drawing explicitly controls the conversion.

Approval package

List any required first-article report, PPAP level, control plan, material report, dimensional layout or capability study. Availability and scope must be confirmed before quotation.

QUALIFICATION CHECK

Information that should exist before supplier approval.

  1. 01A controlled drawing revision and 3D model
  2. 02Exact material specification, class or grade
  3. 03Critical characteristics and inspection method
  4. 04Casting-only or casting-plus-machining scope
  5. 05Sample approval and recurring-order documentation
  6. 06Packaging, Incoterm and destination requirements

BUYER QUESTIONS

Answers that define the boundary.

Can Anxin quote an ASTM grade from an HT or QT reference?

Send the governing ASTM specification and grade. Similar strength labels are not automatic equivalents; Anxin reviews the standard, section thickness, test basis and drawing requirements before confirming feasibility.

Can a U.S. buyer request PPAP or a first-article report?

Yes, include the requested PPAP level or first-article contents in the RFQ. Anxin will confirm which documents, samples and measurements can be included before the order.

Can one supplier cover casting and machining?

Anxin evaluates combined casting and machining projects. Machining datums, stock allowance, critical bores, threads, sealing faces and inspection points should be identified on the drawing.

What should be included for a landed-cost comparison?

State destination, annual demand, batch size, packaging, Incoterm, inspection documents and whether tooling, samples, machining or surface treatment are included.
